For general lighting, don't place the fixture (i.e. A floor lamp or pendant lamp, etc) at once next to a wall or other big objects. For task lighting, in case of reading purposes, try and have the light source come from behind the reader's shoulder. This is accomplished by placing a floor lamp or table lamp either at the right or the left of the reading chair. The base of the shade should be found at eyelevel to avoid glare. There aren't any hard rules to observe but lighting can be tough to get exactly right. Get a friend or neighbour to help you out, move lamps around and don't be frightened to change things up.
